Q: Is Chiropractic Treatment Right for Me?

A: Chiropractic treatment is a safe, natural and holistic treatment option and can be beneficial for everyone, no matter what the age or condition for which treatment is required. Your chiropractor will however perform a full case history and thorough physical examination in order to determine whether or not chiropractic treatment is the best option for you.

Q: Is Chiropractic Treatment Safe?

A: It is important to understand that any medical procedure, including chiropractic adjustments/manipulation, carry some degree of risk. The most frequent complaint is an increase in the inflammation and pain around the joint that was being treated. The good news is that this pain will settle down within the next day or two since it was originally caused by the misalignment of vertebrae or other extremity joints. An easy, inexpensive and effective way to reduce this inflammation and/or pain, is to apply a ice pack (or frozen peas) to the area that was treated as soon as possible.

Other minor risks associated with chiropractic adjustments include sprains and/or strains, dislocation of a joint and a fracture. However, you can rest assured.... According to studies, you have a greater chance of being struck down by lightning, than to experience any form of the above mentioned risks!!!

Q: What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment or Manipulation?

A: The prime area of interest for a chiropractor lies in the adjustment or manipulation of spinal or extremity joints. This technique is extremely specialized and will only be applied to specific restricted areas of the spine or extremities as determined during the consultation. The aim of this technique is restore movement, and decrease the amount of inflammation and pain.

Q: Why Is There Sometimes a Cracking or Popping Sound During The Adjustment?

A: The chiropractic adjustment/manipulation is primarily aimed at restoring the movement within a joint complex. When this happens, the gas located withing the joint capsule moves around and sometimes results in a cracking or popping sound. It is important to note that the presence or absence of this sound does not necessarily indicate the efficacy of the adjustment/manipulation. The intention was to induce movement, and not sound!!

Q: How Many Treatments Will I Require?

This question is extremely difficult to answer, as everyone will respond differently to chiropractic treatment. There are a few important factors that play a role in deciding the number of treatments that you will require. These include:

  • Is the condition for which you are seeking treatment a new complaint (acute), or an old (chronic) problem? Chronic conditions often take a little longer to treat and therefore will require more treatments.
  • Your general state of health - if you follow a healthy and active lifestyle, you will respond much quicker to treatment.
  • Your body's natural healing rate.
  • The presence of any underlying conditions that might potentially influence the condition.
  • The manner in which the injury/condition occurred or developed.
  • Any previous treatment received.
  • The most important factor.... whether or not you have a positive mindset and your compliance with certain implementations such as exercise and dietary modifications.
